Transition Rogers Park launched its initiative with TWO March events! Fourteen of us gathered at Loyola’s Lakeshore Campus on May 26 for a screening and discussion of the film The End of Suburbia and a brief presentation of the Transition Towns movement. Many who attended this event came because they had already heard about Transition Towns and wanted to know more. We began our gathering with the self-teaching peak oil exercise from the Transition Handbook. This was an excellent way to stimulate discussion and provide positive interaction among all present. Because we were a small group, we took the time to introduce ourselves, creating the space for future relationship with one another.
Our second event, held last Saturday (March 28) at the Loyola Park Field House in Rogers Park, was a workshop on transition gardening. The concept, patterned after the victory gardens created in World War II, was designed to encourage people to plant food in any available space – front, rear or side yard, balcony or patio. We covered what to plant, when to plant, where to plant, how to compost and build healthy soil, and how to install a rain barrel. We briefly talked about why today’s food system is not sustainable, and what we can do locally to help build food security and grow good quality food at home and in our community. The workshop, led by Thea Carlson, Angelic Organics Learning Center and Victoria Anderson, Gethsemane Gardens, was such a success that we hope to schedule a second one the first part of May!
